U.S. heiress Gloria Vanderbilt died on Monday at the age of 95, her son Anderson Cooper announced. She had advanced stomach cancer. Scion of the wealthy Vanderbilt family and the subject of a heavily publicized custody battle early in life, she later also became a performer, artist, and designer of porcelain, linens, and a well-known line of designer jeans.

Anderson Cooper, of CNN, one of Vanderbilt’s four sons, stated, “Gloria Vanderbilt was an extraordinary woman, who loved life, and lived it on her own terms […] She was a painter, a writer, and designer but also a remarkable mother, wife, and friend. She was 95 years old, but ask anyone close to her, and they’d tell you, she was the youngest person they knew, the coolest, and most modern.”

Vanderbilt was born in 1924 into the wealthy Vanderbilt family, great-great granddaughter of the railroad and shipping tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt. Her father, Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt, died with liver disease when she was one. At the age of ten, Vanderbilt was the subject of a heavily publicized custody battle between her widowed mother, Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt, and her aunt, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, who controlled a large piece of the Vanderbilt fortune. Her aunt won.

Although she had a trust fund worth US$5 million that she shared with one half-sister, over the course of her life, Vanderbilt also earned income herself through various pursuits. Encouraged to explore creative outlets by a psychotherapist, Vanderbilt took acting lessons and eventually performed on stage in The Time of Your Life in 1955 and appeared on television programs. She also focused on art and design, creating paintings, collages, linens, and a brand of designer jeans that would generate millions in sales. In 1990, the Smithsonian museum featured her jeans alongside the works of designers including Coco Chanel in an exhibit on gender and style.

Syracuse University pop culture professor Robert Thompson remarked, “The thing that really made Gloria Vanderbilt penetrate the American consciousness was the blue jeans war of the late ’70s and early 1980s […] The jeans moved from being functional clothes to designer jeans […] it was her attempt to take something that was so unglamorous and invest it in high fashion style.”

Vanderbilt was married to talent agent Pasquale “Pat” Di Cicco; conductor Leopold Stokowski, who fathered two of her sons; director Sidney Lumet; and author Wyatt Cooper; but, according to her memoirs, also had some degree of romantic involvement with, amongst others, Errol Flynn, Frank Sinatra, and Marlon Brando. She would later say her union with Cooper was her only happy marriage.

Vanderbilt also authored several books, including the memoirs Once Upon a Time and Black Knight, White Knight and the 2009 novel Obsession, which the New York Times called “the steamiest book ever written by an octogenarian.”

Vanderbilt is survived by two sons with Stokowski, Stanislaus and Christopher, and by her son Anderson Cooper. Another son, Carter Cooper, predeceased her.

Ford Specialist Mechanics Responsibilities

Ford is a vehicle brand name that caters to many different clients. The name comes from decades of hard work and ingenuity to produce innovative and highly functional vehicles which appeal to people. It is not only the design of the automobiles that appeal to the consumers but also the features that come with them. Through the years, the innovations that have cropped up in these vehicles are very influential to other car manufacturers. Mechanics and technicians have a responsibility to their client and their company to do their jobs properly and thoroughly. The safety and the lives of the drivers and passengers depend on how safe the mechanic is with his maintenance and repair work. Even replacing the parts, installing them into their original locations after repair is something that needs to be done thoroughly, with a lot of care.

Mechanics Due to the numerous innovations and improvements that have occurred to the Ford vehicles over the years, some of the modern Ford parts are more exclusive than ever. This means that mechanics that maintain and fix them need to learn how to use the parts. The people who design and manufacture these vehicles also need to teach specialists to make sure that they are running according to their correct function. Exclusive features that other vehicles might not have are often the area of focus that mechanics are taught and trained in for those under this brand name. Although most mechanics are trained in similar fields and systems, many of the car manufacturers prefer to make slight differences in their systems. These differences make the vehicle systems dissimilar in spite of having many other similarities. Most automatic transmission vehicles have a computer box which dictates the responses of the vehicle to the actions of the driver. This computer box also needs to be checked regularly to prevent any glitches that can lead to a break down which may endanger the driver and the passengers. The training includes systematic maintenance work such as a changing lubricant, tune-ups, brake repairs, adding coolant and many other maintenance works. Ford specialists are also trained in body repair for automobiles which are dented due to collisions and accidents. It is quite easy to simply change the dented or damaged body part but some parts are too big to change such as the rear fenders and the top. These may need to be repaired manually. Other manual repairs that technicians and mechanics are trained to do include changing the tires and checking up the systems connected to it. Tires need to be replaced every few years or depending on the condition they are in. These are the things that make contact and friction with the road, which is why it is important to have these checked regularly for any cracks which may lead to a blowout. Ford mechanics are also trained to check on the condition of the interior of the automobile. The interior includes the windows and their mechanisms, the air conditioning units and vents, the condition of the upholstery and many others.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced today at a news conference that the U.S. has declared a public health emergency in light of the swine flu outbreak. The total number of confirmed swine flu cases in the United States stands at 20.

Secretary Napolitano said that the United States’ declaration follows suit with the “standard operating procedure” of such an outbreak to make more government resources available to combat the disease. One direct result of the declaration is the government’s mobilization of approximately 12 million doses of Tamiflu to locations where the states can quickly access their share of the medication if needed.

Secretary Napolitano urged residents not to panic saying that the government is issuing a “declaration of emergency preparedness.” Secretary Napolitano added, “Really that’s what we’re doing right now. We’re preparing in an environment where we really don’t know ultimately what the size of seriousness of this outbreak is going to be.”

John Brennan, a Homeland Security assistant, added that “at this point, a top priority is to ensure that communication is robust and that medical surveillance efforts are fully activated.”

This afternoon, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg reported that 8 students from the St. Francis Prepatory School in Queens, New York have contracted the swine flu. All in all, more than 100 students from that high school were absent last week with flu-like symptoms.

Meanwhile, public health officials in Ohio today announced one confirmed case of swine flu in the state. Thus far, California has reported 7 confirmed cases of swine flu, while Kansas and Texas have each reported two confirmed cases.

At the same news conference Dr. Richard Besser, the acting director from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said to expect additional cases of swine flu to be reported in the short term. Dr. Besser added that the U.S. could also start seeing cases of the disease where the effects are more dramatic: “We’re going to see more severe disease in this country”. So far, no one in the U.S. has died from swine flu.

Correction — Nov 1, 2013 The article below claims each passenger paid 4000 to 8000 USD. Each paid 30,000 Rupees, equivilent at the time to about US$375.

The bodies of 46 Afghan illegal immigrants who suffocated to death in a container truck Saturday near Quetta, Pakistan, returned home Tuesday.

The Edhi Foundation placed the victim’s bodies into coffins to transport them back to Chaman. Funeral prayers were said before victims left Quetta hospital. “We are taking these dead bodies to Spin Boldak and later these will be flown to Kabul by helicopter. We are thankful to Pakistan government for every help,” said Afghan consul general Daud Mohsini.

Afghan officials received the bodies from The Edhi ambulances and Pakistan police escorts at the Pak-Afghan border Bab-e-Dosti (Friendship Gate). Security was high and traffic was backed up at the border crossing. The bodies were taken to Kandahar then to Kabul before they were laid to rest in their home towns.

Hamid Karzai, President of Afghanistan dispatched aircraft to Pakistan to bring home the 46 victims. Poor weather grounded the planes, and the bodies were driven back across the border.

Pakistan police found a locked truck packed with approximately 111 Afghan illegal immigrants around 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Quetta on Saturday. The driver had fled the scene where 62 people were initially pronounced dead. Police said that from the strong smell emanating from the truck, the victims may have died days before they were discovered.

45 other people were found unconscious and taken directly to the hospital. At hospital two more migrants died. “The death toll is 46,” said Ghulam Dastagir, a police official.

Wazir Khan Nasir, a senior police official said, “We have been able to talk to some of the people, who were trapped in the container. They were all Afghans in the container and the container was going to Iran, When the condition of people inside the container deteriorated, the driver fled, leaving the container.”

Survivors have reported that a human smuggling racket locked 64 Kabul residents and 37 Spin Boldak residents in the truck container Friday afternoon. The truck’s air conditioning unit stopped working causing the locked passengers to cry out for help which was unheeded by the truck’s driver, and they fell unconscious. However, the loud ruckus caused by the trapped people inside did alert police and local residents to their plight.

The trip had cost each illegal immigrant US$4,000 to 8,000 for the trip. Gul Zameen, a survivor said, “We are all poor and wanted to find jobs in Quetta and Iran.”

The survivors have been charged under the Foreigners Act and some have been detained. Karzai has ordered an investigation and “demanded people avoid dangerous illegal migration and not be deceived by smugglers.” “We’ll go to Pakistan and talk to the survivors to find out what had exactly happened. The culprits will be brought to justice,” said Moheeddin Baluch head of the investigating delegation.

Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is also investigating. Five suspects believed to be involved in running the human smuggling racket have been arrested.

The importance of effective website design can never be undermined. Right from having the potential to attract new customers to getting you more sales, a good quality and attractive web design is something that can mean the difference between a no sale and an actual purchase!

Clean design

One of the biggest mistakes most people make is to clutter up their website with unnecessary content and imagery. This not only distracts the user but you maybe actually preventing the user from seeing the important aspects on your site. For example you may think that having a Flash introductory page will help in luring more customers. Fact is search engines don t even recognize such pages! Imagine your home page not even being scanned by search engines! Not such a happy idea, right? Any good quality web designer will advise you against having such a Flash intro page.

Interactivity is key

When we talk about interactivity we are not talking about feedback forms and text input forms! It is much more and bigger than that. The entire concept of Web 2.0 is fast gaining popularity as far as custom web design services go. Many of such service providers also specialize in Web 2.0 methodologies to help enhance the overall potential of website design.

Centralized layout

The most important feature of Web 2.0 as far as professional web design goes is the usage of a centralized layout. This often sends out an impression that your site is honest and bold while also being simple. These are traits users look for in a brand and sending out such signals is always a positive sign.

Less number of columns

In the earlier days of custom web design the norm used to be to use as many as 4 columns while 3 columns on a site were more common. However with the advent of Web 2.0 technology the norm these days is to use just 2 columns on the site and 3 is the maximum that you would possibly go.

Demarcating sections

It is very essential to let users know which parts of your site deserve priority. One of the best ways to do this is by using bold colors where you want users to look first. For example if you want to highlight a discount on a new product make sure to use attractive coloring and effects there. After all it will decide a sale! A good web designer familiar with Web 2.0 design aspects will ensure your site is well differentiated. For example differentiating the header of the web page from the rest will do you good.

Another important requisite of any good website designer is that they will ensure your site has easy navigation. That means users should ideally be able to search for information easily without much hassle. Also, the information and content represented on the website should never be overpowered by the design. For example, too much of flash animations, blinking text as well as other design elements can take away from the central purpose of the page. These are some of the suggestions that a good quality graphic designer will suggest to you.

Claddagh wedding themes can be both cultural and decorative, depending on how far you want to carry the theme throughout the wedding. Whether you come from Irish descent or simply appreciate the culture, a Claddagh wedding needs to follow a few traditions. If you are unsure how to put in your own personal flare, but still keep to the traditions of a Celtic wedding, here are a few decorative ideas to make your theme come to life.

Suggested Color Scheme

The colors for a traditional Claddagh wedding should stick to ivory, white and greens. You do not have to use bright greens, but keep it within the green family by utilizing pastel or neon colors instead. Integrate gold or silver accents to keep with the traditional colors, while adding some elegance.

Flower Arrangement and Bouquets

Your flowers should follow the color scheme of the wedding. Some traditional flowers that can be used are roses and lilies, but no one flower is a tradition for this type of theme. Shamrocks, however, are a traditional greenery found in Celtic weddings; therefore you should find a way to integrate them into your arrangements. Depending on the time of year, your florist may be able to include some clover in the dcor and/or your bouquets and boutonnieres.

Keep your flowers simple and in line with the colors. Green can be used for both flowers and fillers in your floral arrangements. For example, ivory roses and peonies can be paired with green hydrangea and green rose leaves. Talk to your florist about how to pair your traditional Celtic wedding colors with your floral arrangements.

Table Decorations

Decorate your tables using traditional taste, but with a few modern twists. Use ivory or white tablecloths and integrate green or silver table runners to keep the setting very classic. Centerpieces can be made from flowers or you can utilize pillar candles tied with green and silver ribbon. Use elegant chinaware that is white or ivory and has either green accents or silver accents. Escort cards can be attached to Celtic knot place card holders and guests names listed on ivory or white cardstock using silver or green font. You could even name tables after different locations in Ireland.

Wedding Cake and Food

Stick to the tradition of Irish food by serving a menu full of Celtic recipes. Try pot roasts, roasted potatoes and very hearty dishes, which the Irish culture is known for. Do not be afraid to talk to your caterer about ways to make your menu more modern, but still incorporating traditional recipes. For example, rather than serving whole baked potatoes, offer puffed potato bites or a do-it-yourself baked potato station with different toppings.

For the wedding cake, keep the decorations simple, such as white or ivory fondant accented with silver or green ribbon borders. Use a Claddagh cake topper to finish off your cake and integrate roses or shamrocks as part of the floral topper and cake table decorations. Try fun flavors for your wedding cake such as Irish Crme.

Wedding Favors

Though many of your guests will not be aware of Irish traditions, try to culturally educate them with favors themed after your Claddagh wedding. Give away Celtic knot key chains or bookmarks. Four leaf clover soaps and bath salts using traditional Irish scents are always welcomed by guests too. Give away edible treats such as Irish soda bread wrapped in muslin, mini cakes or mint tins.

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.
