One hundred and twenty detainees at an immigration removal centre in Oxford, UK, are on hunger strike. The protest started when some detainees refused breakfast on Wednesday 14th June 2006. A letter from the hunger strikers explaining why they are seeking to draw attention to their plight in this way has been reproduced in full below.

Those detained at the centre are mostly men who have sought asylum in the UK and whose asylum applications have been rejected. These people are then held without knowing how long they will be detained for – some end up being held for many years while awaiting deportation.

The removal centre, known as Campsfield, or Campsfield House is approximately 5 miles north of Oxford and has been in operation since 1993. It was managed on behalf of the UK Government by Global Solutions Limited, until may 2006 when it was taken on by GEO UK, the centre has a capacity of 198. Only males are detained at Campsfield.

According to the campaign group Barbed Wire Britain Over 2,600 individuals, mostly asylum seekers, are detained indefinitely in the UK without trial and with no automatic right to bail.

There have been reports in the UK press of the state taking people to detention centres without notice, in the early hours of the morning using excessively heavy handed tactics, taking children out of schools and separating families.

Many UK people and politicians express their disgust at the way detainees are treated, yet it continues. Perhaps this action by the detainees themselves will further highlight their plight and result in more UK electors writing to their MPs and demanding improvements to the way in which rejected asylum seekers are treated.

“We are detainees at Campsfield removal centre in Oxford. Most of us have been here for a long while now. There are people who have been detained for up to two years and down to three months. We are cramped in here like animals. We are treated like animals and moved around different detention centres like animals. The immigration service have taken husbands from their families and taken people who ran away from persecution in their various countries, and dumped everyone in here.

Once you are put in here the immigration service forget you. There are detainees who have applied to go back to their own countries that are still being held here for months without any news about their cases, just so that the private security companies get more money.

Detainees are asked to seek asylum and then refused. The immigration service also ask detainees to apply for bail. When you get a bail hearing date all of a sudden they serve you with removal papers that are not valid. There are many of these situations. In most cases the immigration service don’t take you to your court hearings. And then they tell the judges you refused to turn up, just so the hearing goes ahead in your absence. Many detainees have been served with removal papers and travel documents but nothing happens on the removal day.

Campsfield has become a slave house. We detainees are treated like slaves, to do odd jobs for officers. Detainees are handcuffed to see doctors or dentists in hospitals or clinic appointments. We have some racist security officers who make racist comments to detainees and go out of their way to make you feel like committing suicide. Detainees have to be at the point of death before they get to see the doctors.

The food is not worth eating. Even dogs would refuse to eat what we eat. But we don’t have a choice; every single day we eat the same food (the food we eat is rice, chicken, sandwiches, and left-over eggs)”.

The US Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that plaintiffs bringing lawsuits against employers need not prove the employers intended to discriminate against them on the basis of their age. The ruling lowers the legal bar, over which an employee who felt wronged by an employer must pass, by allowing cases to move forward when explicit evidence is lacking.

The court ruled on the case of police officers in Jackson, Miss. In their 5-3 decision, they found for a group of officers to proceed with damages claiming they were harmed by their department’s salary policy. The findings of the court do not mean the group of officers will necessarily win their lawsuit. Rather, the judges thought their particular case was flimsy, but they ruled the officer’s complaints were on valid grounds to pursue the claim. Therefore, the suit will not be thrown out of Mississippi’s state court as being groundless.

Business interests closely watching the case and fearing worse were reassured by the court stopping far short of supporting the officers’ claims. The Jackson city salary plan was changed to increase the pay of junior level officers by 30% to be competitive with surrounding municipalities and attract recruits.

The more senior level police officers’ age discrimination allegations will probably not be enough to win the suit, but the effect of the new law means employers will need to defend their practices, and cannot summarily get lawsuits dismissed on the basis of allegations being groundless. Legal scholars believe this has importance because it acknowledges some forms of age discrimination in the work place are subtle. With half of US workers in the workforce now over 40, employers will need to be attentive to their practices or find them challenged in court.

The language of the ruling broadens the nation’s existing law found in the Age Discrimination in Employment Act passed in 1967. While lawyers do not expect a great increase in age-bias cases due to the ruling, it does make the path to mounting a case easier. It is notable that corporate policies that do adversely discriminate against older workers are still considered legal if they are formed on reasonable grounds other than age. The law’s effect will not necessarily have employers change their policies, but rather re-think their practices to assure they are fair.

The Effects of Missing Teeth Harmful To Your Long Term Health

by

Wrong Bite Position

Once you have gaps within your gums where teeth have been removed, the manner in which your jaw moves is affected. The tilt, as well as drift, that is brought on by the gap will bring about problems to the opposite teeth. Therefore, before you know it, your opposite jaw will begin experiencing bite relationship difficulties. This will also be the start of problems with your jaw point. Additionally, these tooth gaps harbor food particles which mean an increase in decay, as well as gum diseases. It is therefore advisable that you to get dental implants in order to fix this problem.

Deterioration of Your Jawbone

The moment you lose a tooth, either from an accident, extraction or gum disease, the bone that was supporting the tooth within the jaw starts dissolving. This is what a dentist calls resorption. If this gap is not tended to, bone dissolving will go on. Therefore, visiting an implant dentist would be a great idea as this will stop further bone loss.

Smile Contortion

When a tooth is lost, mainly an incisor, your smile is tampered with. This goes a long way as far as damaging your self esteem. No one wants a contorted smile, therefore one will choose to bid smiling farewell, yet a smile is the best thing you can give someone else. Adding to that bad list, is your face s shape being altered. Therefore, opting for

implant dentistry

would revamp your self esteem, help in re-shaping your face, as well as give you back the power to smile at anyone without worrying about what they will think.

Teeth do much more than chew food, they shape your face, help in controlling jaw movement and keep the gums safe. Therefore, as soon as you lose a tooth, make sure that you get it replaced. It will save you a score of problems, not to mention discomforts. Visit an

implant dentist

today, it will be worth your time.

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Most people already know that a new vehicle is out of the question, which is why they focus on pre-owned cars. If you need a different car or just want one, you can’t go wrong with a Subaru. A used Legacy in Mokena is one of the longest running models available and is nearly 20 years old. This tells you that the maker has done something right because people still love them and they last.

All-Wheel Drive

It is considered a mid-size sedan, and as such, was designed with AWD to protect it from sliding and slippage during wet/cold weather. In most cases, you only find AWD on larger or heavier cars/trucks because they need the weight to give the tires traction, but the design of the used Legacy in Mokena is different.

Performance

No matter which vehicle you love, you want it to perform at its peak. While you likely want it to go from zero to 60 in mere seconds, you don’t necessarily drive it like that. With this vehicle, you’ll note that it is a sporty sedan, though it will also ride smoothly and be comfortable with the standard 2.5L engine. Likewise, you’ll experience a quieter ride with perfectly weighted steering.

The turbocharged GT and GT Limited versions come with turbo engines, firm suspension, and some come with a manual transmission.

Redesigns

You’ll also note that the latest new designs took place in 2010 and up, and includes seven different trim levels. They’re roomier and have more luxury interiors, as well as an aggressive design outside. Many of them have standard safety features, though you can sometimes find pre-owned cars with the added features, as well.

A used Subaru Legacy in Mokena ensures that you get the style, performance, and safety features you crave. Visit http://www.hawksubaru.com now to learn more.

Yesterday, English football club Chelsea FC announced reaching an agreement with Spanish-capital club Real Madrid to transfer Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to Madrid. Real Madrid via their official website said Courtois “has signed for the club for the next six seasons.”

26-year-old Courtois has been Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper for the last four seasons. He joined The Blues in 2011 from Belgian club K.R.C. Genk. In the last four seasons at Chelsea, Courtois won Premier League titles in 2014–15 and 2016–17, an EFL Cup in 2014–15, and the FA Cup in the last season. In his 2016–17 season for Chelsea, the Belgian kept sixteen clean-sheets in league matches.

Just after joining Chelsea in 2011, Courtois was loaned to Real Madrid’s cross-town rivals Atlético Madrid. During this previous spell in Spain, Courtois won one each of the Spanish LaLiga, Copa del Rey, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Super Cup. Courtois won the Adidas Golden Glove in this year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia, winning the third-place medal with Belgium.

According to report by ESPN, Real Madrid had to pay about £35 million for the transfer. At the same time, Real Madrid’s midfielder Mateo Kova?i? is loaned to Chelsea for the next season. In Real Madrid’s official announcement, they said Courtois is to be presented at Santiago Bernabeu today at 1 pm after his medical examination.

In an ongoing labor dispute from May of this year in California, United States, Teamsters Local 952, which represents the Orange County Transportation Authority‘s 1,200 coach operators, went on strike at 12:35 a.m. (0035 hrs) PDT Saturday morning after a cooling-off period declared by State Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger expired.

Sanctioned picket lines have been formed outside Authority facilities in Garden Grove, Anaheim, and Santa Ana. About 200,000 regular passengers are affected.

Major sticking points in the negotiation appear to be related to cost-of-living increases and pension funding allocations. The strike was declared after the Authority’s bargaining agent said he lacked authority to approve a union counter proposal, which he said had to be taken before the OCTA’s board of directors, who will not be available to meet until Monday the 9th at the earliest.

Every time I used to diet I got grouchy. Real cranky.

Man, was I fed up with not being able to lose weight. Ive tried everything. Every new diet that comes out, every new exercise fad, I am on it. The problem is, I get bored, I stop doing it and I fall off the wagon over and over again.

So what is the answer? My friend of many years, Mike, told me the secret to losing weight with exercise is to do something fun and exciting. Do something, he says, that you will want to do, not something you have to do. Find that something and you will exercise every day and it wont feel like exercise. Sounds good to me.

I began with some classes at the local gym. Good stuff, I can tell you from first hand experience. The instructor was young and fit and very energetic. She got us all pumped up and ready to work out! Afterwards I felt sore and tired of course, but during the class I had energy I havent had in years. I couldnt believe it. The thing is though, I am not all that into to going to the gym. I like having privacy and staying at home. The problem is how to get motivated by myself?

Then I found out about cardio kickboxing DVDs available. For a few weeks, I did it three times a week. I felt fantastic. Never felt better and I could not believe how easily I was losing weight. After about a month, my pants starting falling off! I had to get a tighter belt, I can tell you that much. A whole new wardrobe was on the way and I was not complaining.

After two months people did not recognize me anymore. I would see people I hadnt seen for a while and they were like, who are you? It was a great feeling, that is for sure. All my hard work was paying off. So how does kickboxing work so well when most other ways of losing weight dont?

Well, you see, cardio kickboxing uses every muscle in your body all the time. I know I felt muscles I did not even know I had after the first few days. It was incredible. The more muscle you use, the more calories you burn and the faster your body starts to transform into a lean mean machine like mine did.

Another thing is that it is fun to do. My buddy Mike was right. If you find something you like to do, you are more likely to do it consistently. I started gaining more confidence and that led to more results. Each fed into the other, results breeding confidence and vice-versa.

So if you are like me and are fed up with all the same old stuff at the gym, try getting your hands on a DVD that can be fun and give you results. My body and outlook on working out will never be the same.

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate John Wolfe, Jr. of Tennessee took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Wolfe, an attorney based out of Chattanooga, announced his intentions last year to challenge President Barack Obama in the Democratic Party presidential primaries. So far, he has appeared on the primary ballots in New Hampshire, Missouri, and Louisiana. In Louisiana, he had his strongest showing, winning 12 percent overall with over 15 percent in some congressional districts, qualifying him for Democratic National Convention delegates. However, because certain paperwork had not been filed, the party stripped Wolfe of the delegates. Wolfe says he will sue the party to receive them.

Wolfe will compete for additional delegates at the May 22 Arkansas primary and the May 29 Texas primary. He is the only challenger to Obama in Arkansas, where a May 10 Hendrix College poll of Democrats shows him with 38 percent support, just short of the 45 percent for Obama. Such an outing would top the margin of Texas prison inmate Keith Russell Judd, who finished 18 percent behind Obama with 41 percent in the West Virginia Democratic primary; the strongest showing yet against the incumbent president. Despite these prospects, the Democratic Party of Arkansas has already announced that if Wolfe wins any delegates in their primary, again, due to paperwork, the delegates will not be awarded. Wolfe will appear on the Texas ballot alongside Obama, activist Bob Ely, and historian Darcy Richardson, who ended his campaign last month.

Wolfe has previously run for U.S. Congress as the Democratic Party’s nominee. On his campaign website, he cites the influence “of the Pentagon, Wall Street, and corporations” on the Obama administration as a reason for his challenge, believing these negatively affect “loyal Americans, taxpayers and small businesses.” Wolfe calls for the usage of anti-trust laws to break up large banks, higher taxes on Wall Street, the creation of an “alternative federal reserve” to assist community banks, and the implementation of a single-payer health care system.

With Wikinews, Wolfe discusses his campaign, the presidency of Barack Obama, corporations, energy, the federal budget, immigration, and the nuclear situation in Iran among other issues.
