Can you make a living trading options? In fact, has anyone ever made a living just trading options?
This is a question that a lot of beginners who has yet to start learning about options asked me. In fact, for some of them, it seems like being able to make a living out of solely trading options is the only motivation for them to learn it in the first place.
Well, having traded options for more than fifteen years, I regard myself a professional options trader and I would say the possibility exist for making a living out of only trading options if you are really good at it. However, as a responsible financial adviser, the golden adage still goes, Never Put All Your Eggs In One Basket.
The right way to financial stability, security and freedom is to make sure you have multiple streams of income. Nobody should depend solely on their job income for their livelihood as the risk of retrenchment always exists. Nobody should depend solely on real estate rental income for their livelihood as the risk of default on payment and non-rental exists. Likewise, nobody should depend solely on options trading for their livelihood as the risk of the market making an unexpected move that wipes out short term gains exists. There are no perfect ways of making money and that is why we DIVERSIFY!
While it is possible to make your main income through options trading when you get really good at it, you will still need to augment your income with other residual sources such as real estate rental or even your job income in order to hedge against risk. Yes, financial stability is a science and an art which requires effort and time to get right. There is no shortcut and no quick fix. There isn’t a single method of making money which could allow you to rest on your laurels for the rest of your life. That is why the super rich still spend so much time making money and investing their money.
Personally, while I make my main income from options trading, I actually have about thirteen other streams of residual income to help me through the tough times such as the 2008 market crash which caught me somewhat by surprise and I wasn’t able to react fast enough on my options trades to avoid initial losses. If I had not my other sources of residual income, I would have gone without food and would have defaulted on my mortgages during those few tough months when I didn’t make an income from my options trading at all.
Yes, all means of making money have their ups and downs. There are no perfect investments. As such, even though it is possible to make a living from options trading, my advise is that you should treat options trading as another weapon in your arsenal to financial freedom and security. Every mean of money making that you learn gives you that edge and allows you to survive under more market and economic conditions.

A Russian-made aircraft carrying sophisticated arms and ammunition to Nepal has been detained in Ahmedabad. The Jana Astha reported that the plane’s cargo, which was comprised of rifles, ammunition and anti-aircraft guns, was probably made in Israel. The lack of documents regarding the cargo made Indian authorities suspicious, prompting them to order the aeroplane to land after it entered Indian airspace. The plane, headed for Kathmandu has been on the tarmac at the Sardar Patel International Airport for six days now.
According to reports, the consignment is part of a deal struck between Nepal and the manufacturer of the arms, at a time when both India (the largest supplier of arms to Nepal) and the U.S have suspended military dealings with the King to show their displeasure at his attempts to suppress democracy in his country. India has contacted the Nepalese embassy in New Delhi about this matter
India has long been supplying military equipment to its Himalayan neighbour, that too at a 70% subsidy. Many Nepalese governments however, failed to make payments, thereby resulting in a credit amount of several million rupees. India waived the dues as a goodwill gesture when Nepal’s PM Girija Prasad Koirala visited New Delhi this June.

Evansville, Indiana, United States — This past week marked the opening night of an Andy Warhol exhibit at the University of Southern Indiana. USI’s art gallery, like 189 other educational galleries and museums around the country, is a recipient of a major Warhol donor program, and this program is cultivating new interest in Warhol’s photographic legacy. Wikinews reporters attended the opening and spoke to donors, exhibit organizers and patrons.
The USI art gallery celebrated the Thursday opening with its display of Warhol’s Polaroids, gelatin silver prints and several colored screen prints. USI’s exhibit, which is located in Evansville, Indiana, is to run from January 23 through March 9.
The McCutchan Art Center/Pace Galleries at USI bases its exhibit around roughly 100 Polaroids selected from its collection. The Polaroids were all donated by the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program, according to Kristen Wilkins, assistant professor of photography and curator of the exhibit. The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts made two donations to USI Art Collections, in 2007 and a second recently.
Kathryn Waters, director of the gallery, expressed interest in further donations from the foundation in the future.
Since 2007 the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program has seeded university art galleries throughout the United States with over 28,000 Andy Warhol photographs and other artifacts. The program takes a decentralized approach to Warhol’s photography collection and encourages university art galleries to regularly disseminate and educate audiences about Warhol’s artistic vision, especially in the area of photography.
Wikinews provides additional video, audio and photographs so our readers may learn more.
Wilkins observed that the 2007 starting date of the donation program, which is part of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, coincided with the 20th anniversary of Andy Warhol’s death in 1987. USI was not alone in receiving a donation.
K.C. Maurer, chief financial officer and treasurer at the Andy Warhol Foundation, said 500 institutions received the initial invitation and currently 190 universities have accepted one or more donations. Institutional recipients, said Mauer, are required to exhibit their donated Warhol photographs every ten years as one stipulation.
While USI is holding its exhibit, there are also Warhol Polaroid exhibits at the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York and an Edward Steichen and Andy Warhol exhibit at the Mary & Leigh Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. All have received Polaroids from the foundation.
University exhibits can reach out and attract large audiences. For example, the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro saw attendance levels reach 11,000 visitors when it exhibited its Warhol collection in 2010, according to curator Elaine Gustafon. That exhibit was part of a collaboration combining the collections from Duke University, located in Durham, North Carolina, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which also were recipients of donated items from the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program.
Each collection donated by the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program holds Polaroids of well-known celebrities. The successful UNC Greensboro exhibit included Polaroids of author Truman Capote and singer-songwriter Carly Simon.
“I think America’s obsession with celebrity culture is as strong today as it was when Warhol was living”, said Gustafon. “People are still intrigued by how stars live, dress and socialize, since it is so different from most people’s every day lives.”
Wilkins explained Warhol’s obsession with celebrities began when he first collected head shots as a kid and continued as a passion throughout his life. “He’s hanging out with the celebrities, and has kind of become the same sort of celebrity he was interested in documenting earlier in his career”, Wilkins said.
The exhibit at USI includes Polaroids of actor Dennis Hopper; musician Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran; publishers Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone Magazine and Carlo De Benedetti of Italy’s la Repubblica; disco club owner Steve Rubell of Studio 54; photographers Nat Finkelstein, Christopher Makos and Felice Quinto; and athletes Vitas Gerulaitis (tennis) and Jack Nicklaus (golf).
Wikinews observed the USI exhibit identifies and features Polaroids of fashion designer Halston, a former resident of Evansville.
University collections across the United States also include Polaroids of “unknowns” who have not yet had their fifteen minutes of fame. Cynthia Thompson, curator and director of exhibits at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, said, “These images serve as documentation of people in his every day life and art — one which many of us enjoy a glimpse into.”
Warhol was close to important touchstones of the 1960s, including art, music, consumer culture, fashion, and celebrity worship, which were all buzzwords and images Wikinews observed at USI’s opening exhibit.
He was also an influential figure in the pop art movement. “Pop art was about what popular American culture really thought was important”, Kathryn Waters said. “That’s why he did the Campbell Soup cans or the Marilyn pictures, these iconic products of American culture whether they be in film, video or actually products we consumed. So even back in the sixties, he was very aware of this part of our culture. Which as we all know in 2014, has only increased probably a thousand fold.”
“I think everybody knows Andy Warhol’s name, even non-art people, that’s a name they might know because he was such a personality”, Water said.
Hilary Braysmith, USI associate professor of art history, said, “I think his photography is equally influential as his graphic works, his more famous pictures of Marilyn. In terms of the evolution of photography and experimentation, like painting on them or the celebrity fascination, I think he was really ground-breaking in that regard.”

The Polaroid format is not what made Warhol famous, however, he is in the company of other well-known photographers who used the camera, such as Ansel Adams, Chuck Close, Walker Evans, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Helmut Newton.
Wilkins said, “[Warhol] liked the way photo booths and the Polaroid’s front flash looked”. She explained how Warhol’s adoption of the Polaroid camera revealed his process. According to Wilkins, Warhol was able to reproduce the Polaroid photograph and create an enlargement of it, which he then could use to commit the image to the silk screen medium by applying paint or manipulating them further. One of the silk screens exhibited at USI this time was the Annie Oakley screen print called “Cowboys and Indians” from 1987.
Wilkins also said Warhol was both an artist and a businessperson. “As a way to commercialize his work, he would make a blue Marilyn and a pink Marilyn and a yellow Marilyn, and then you could pick your favorite color and buy that. It was a very practical salesman approach to his work. He was very prolific but very business minded about that.”
“He wanted to be rich and famous and he made lots of choices to go that way”, Wilkins said.
| It’s Warhol. He is a legend. | ||
Kiara Perkins, a second year USI art major, admitted she was willing to skip class Thursday night to attend the opening exhibit but then circumstances allowed for her to attend the exhibit. Why did she so badly want to attend? “It’s Warhol. He is a legend.”
For Kevin Allton, a USI instructor in English, Warhol was also a legend. He said, “Andy Warhol was the center of the Zeitgeist for the 20th century and everything since. He is a post-modern diety.”
Allton said he had only seen the Silver Clouds installation before in film. The Silver Clouds installation were silver balloons blown up with helium, and those balloons filled one of the smaller rooms in the gallery. “I thought that in real life it was really kind of magical,” Allton said. “I smacked them around.”
Elements of the Zeitgeist were also playfully recreated on USI’s opening night. In her opening remarks for attendees, Waters pointed out those features to attendees, noting the touches of the Warhol Factory, or the studio where he worked, that were present around them. She pointed to the refreshment table with Campbell’s Soup served with “electric” Kool Aid and tables adorned with colorful gumball “pills”. The music in the background was from such bands as The Velvet Underground.
The big hit of the evening, Wikinews observed from the long line, was the Polaroid-room where attendees could wear a Warhol-like wig or don crazy glasses and have their own Polaroid taken. The Polaroids were ready in an instant and immediately displayed at the entry of the exhibit. Exhibit goers then became part of the very exhibit they had wanted to attend. In fact, many people Wikinews observed took out their mobiles as they left for the evening and used their own phone cameras to make one further record of the moment — a photo of a photo. Perhaps they had learned an important lesson from the Warhol exhibit that cultural events like these were ripe for use and reuse. We might even call these exit instant snap shots, the self selfie.

The New Zealand government today has announced that they will not provide financial assistance to the Overlander train service between Auckland and Wellington, which is set to stop service on September 30, if no assistance is forthcoming. ONTRACK will retain the North Island main trunk line, while looking for tourism operators to start a tourist rail service.
Trevor Mallard, acting Finance Minister, said: “In making this decision… Cabinet recognised that there was no prospect of the current Overlander service becoming commercially viable. It was not a fuel-efficient operation and at an average passenger rate of 50 passengers each way per day, it was used by relatively few people.”
It is cheaper and faster to travel either by bus or plane rather than the 12-hour train journey. “The fares already overlap with airfares, and the reality is that the service is just not well-used. It can not compete with low-priced air travel and coaches. Cabinet considered the regional implications of ceasing the Overlander service and accepted that the current bus services run by the InterCity Group met the needs of those communities,” Mallard said.
There has been numerous petitions from the public and from the Green Party of New Zealand to continue the Overlander train service, including one petition signed by 16,000 people presented at the Parliament Buildings on September 14, 2006. “While there have been a number of propositions about retaining the Overlander service, all of the propositions would require government funding in one form or another,” said Mallard.
Mallard said that the government will only support rail services if it significantly benefitted the community.
The Government estimates that financial assistance to the Overlander train service would cost NZ$1.75 million a year.
“Finally, the government does recognise and value the importance of a viable and efficient rail network in New Zealand’s transport infrastructure. This was a critical factor in the government’s decision to buy the rail network back from Tranz Rail. The government has also committed $200 million to upgrade the national rail network between 2004/05 and 2007/08. A further $600 million has been provided to upgrade the Auckland rail network between 2005/06 and 2009/10.”

Learn about where red cedar comes from, why red cedar is naturally suited as a building material, what red cedar looks like at various stages, why cedar is perfect for decking
Cedar is a truly remarkable material for use in a variety of building products, including (or perhaps especially) decking lumber. This magnificent softwood lends something of the Pacific Northwest to the exteriors of many residences and offices, with warm cinnamon tones that age gracefully to a seasoned silver. Apart from being attractive, with a rustic beauty that is unparalleled, cedar has many natural properties that give it a built-in resistance to the ravages of the elements as well as attack by insects. As such, cedar as a decking material has become one of the most popular choices when planning an exterior addition to a property. Red cedar in particular represents a robust choice in durable and visually striking materials for the kind of decking that adds all kinds of value to any given exterior.
Cedar is a resilient, reliable building material
Red Cedar for use in decking and in other building products is a species native to the coastal regions of the Pacific Northwest. The wood itself is naturally imbued with a high resistance to UV rays, moisture, and insect damage due to the presence of certain chemicals that protect it from degeneration. This is the reason why the species has thrived in such a moisture-heavy environment. These attributes are also a key reason as to why red cedar has been so heavily relied upon as tools and building materials since before the area was settled by Europeans. With these strengths in mind, red cedar is also a softwood, making it very easy to work with. Its look, its natural protection against the elements, and even the pleasant scent that is associated with it, lends it an organic warmth and general appeal that can easily be translated to your decking projects.
Cedar for use as decking
Carrying these benefits over specifically for the purposes of building a deck, cedar does not contain many of the resins or pitch found in other types of wood. This means that applying finish is much easier, which means further protection against the elements. Cedar is resilient enough to discourage the corrosion of decking fasteners, a problem that often leads to leeching of rust into a pressure-treated deck. Cedar is durable, and yet it is also lightweight, adding another level of easy workability when building your deck. Once completed, your deck will retain the natural feel and look that is reminiscent of the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, along with the practical benefits of heat insulation (making for a cooler walking surface than many other wood decks), sound absorption, and dimensional stability that makes it a structural benefit to the rest of your property.
Rich and distinguished red cedar decking
The color of cedar is definite benefit to any decking project, and one which presents a number of options when planning one. When cedar is milled, the color ranges from amber to a pinkish hue, taken as it is from the heartwood of the species. By the time it ships, ready for use as decking lumber, it has matured to a cinnamon reddish-brown. As the cedar ages, the color changes yet again; this time to a distinguished silvery gray, if it has not been stained. But if you choose to stain, the possibilities are even wider!

British Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling announced to a shocked House of Commons today that two password-protected — but not encrypted — computer disks containing the entire Child Benefit database have been lost in transit between the offices of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in Washington, Tyne & Wear and the National Audit Office (NAO) in London, in what has been described as “one of the world’s biggest ID protection failures”.
The database contains details of all families in the UK who receive Child Benefit — all families with children up to 16 years of age, plus those with children up to 20 years old if they are in full-time education or training — estimated to contain 25 million individuals in 7.25 million families. Among other items of information, the database contains names, addresses, dates of birth, child benefit and National Insurance numbers, and where appropriate, bank or building society account details.
The discs were created by a junior official at the HMRC in response to a request for information by the NAO, and were sent unregistered and unrecorded on 18 October using the courier company TNT — which operates the HMRC’s internal mail system. When it was found that the discs had not arrived for audit at the NAO, a further copy of this data was made and sent — this time by registered mail — and this package did arrive. HMRC were not informed that the original discs had been lost until 8 November, and Darling himself was informed on 10 November.
The violation of data protection laws involved in the creation of the discs has led to strong attacks on the government’s competence to establish the proposed National Identity Register, when all UK residents will have an identity card. Conservative Shadow Chancellor George Osborne described the loss of data as “catastrophic” and said “They [the government] simply cannot be trusted with people’s personal information”.
The Chairman of HMRC, Paul Gray, has resigned over the affair, and critics are calling for Darling to do likewise.
This is the third data embarrassment for HMRC in recent weeks — earlier this month it was reported that the details of over 15,000 Standard Life customers had been put on disk, and then lost en route from HMRC in Newcastle to Standard Life in Edinburgh — and last month a laptop containing the data of 400 people with high-value ISAs was stolen from the boot of a car belonging to a HMRC official who had been carrying out a routine audit.

After three years working on a new television series for the Discovery Channel, Stephen Hawking concludes that aliens are “almost certain to exist” and could even be dangerous.
Hawking says that it is rational to assume that intelligent life exists somewhere in the universe, and mathematically unlikely that life is unique to the Earth, given the existence of a hundred billion galaxies, each of them containing hundreds of millions of stars.
Hawking imagines nomadic aliens, having exhausted their home’s resources, could attempt to take control of other planets, invading with “massive ships”, and draws a comparison with Christopher Columbus discovering America, resulting in similar devastating consequences. With this in mind he advises “intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet.” However, he believes that the most likely forms of life would be microbes or simple animals on planets, in the centre of stars or drifting through space.
His declaration comes in the month of the 20th anniversary of the Hubble Space Telescope’s launch into space.
The Drake equation, created in the 1960s, estimates the probability of extraterrestrial civilizations; feeding in modern research gives a high likelihood. The contradiction between this and actual discovery is known as the Fermi paradox.
Sir Martin Rees, the Astronomer Royal, supports efforts to search for transmissions that might be artificial in origin. “Even if we couldn’t make much sense of it, we’d have learnt that ‘intelligence’ wasn’t unique to the hardware inside human skulls, and had emerged elsewhere,” he said.
Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking will begin on May 9 on the Discovery Channel.
Stephen Hawking, 68, retired as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge in 2009. Known for his research into cosmology, quantum gravity and black holes, he became a household name following the publication of his 1988 book A Brief History of Time, which remained on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a record-breaking 237 weeks.

Hundreds of thousands of air travelers had their travel plans disrupted in Europe by volcanic ash from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption.
Tens of thousands of air travelers were stranded when all flights into and out of the United Kingdom were grounded, as it became one of the first nations to be affected. The grounding was even more extensive than that following the September 11 attacks of 2001 when only trans-Atlantic flights were canceled.
Eurocontrol released a statement saying “…most air traffic in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden is suspended.”
The grounding is because the volcanic ash drawn into the jet stream is of a particle size which allows it to remain aloft in the atmosphere. Ingestion of this foreign matter, because of its distribution, would lead to flame outs in all aircraft engines. The composition of the ash also means that it would first melt into glass if it were to enter the engine of an aircraft before solidifying again as it cooled. This could lead to damage to the compressors and fan blades, which would make it impossible to restart the engines, even if the aircraft were to exit the cloud.
The current contingency is informed by the experience of British Airways Flight 9, which on June 24, 1982 suffered just such complete engine flame outs when it flew through the plume of Mount Galunggung in Indonesia. In that case, the flight crew after many efforts was able to restart the engines, though one failed shortly after, and the aircraft landed without casualties.
The UK National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has stated that “restrictions will remain in place in UK controlled airspace until 1300 (UK time) tomorrow, Friday 16 April, at the earliest,” and that “We will review further Met Office information and at 0230 (UK time) tomorrow we will advise the arrangements that will be in place through to 1800 (UK time) tomorrow.” The NATS statement concluded “…the situation cannot be said to be improving”.
In addition to Northern Europe, the ash is drifting south; Berlin and Hamburg airports in Germany are closed, and airports in the Netherlands, Belgium and Northern France are described as now being closed or closing. Some flights from Spain and Portugal, together with upwards of 4,000 flights across Northern Europe, have been affected, and the knock-on effect of aircraft and crews out of position could disrupt air travel worldwide for up to 72 hours.
One affected group are British musicians booked to play at this weekend’s Coachella Festival in California. Amongst those stranded are Frightened Rabbit, Gary Numan, The Cribs and Bad Lieutenant.
Basic Facts about the Stock Market
by
Arkaitz Arteaga
You cant go far in todays world without hearing something about the stock market. Unfortunately, the media take for granted that all of us in the audience understand the stock market. The good news if you dont have a clue how to interpret all of those stock symbols running in the ticker at the bottom of your screen youre not alone.
But thats about to change. Below is an overview of some of things you need to know about the stock market. Stock Market Background The purpose of the stock market is to allow businesses to grow and to let investors have a way of earning money. Let me give you an example on a very small scale. Your child opens up a lemonade stand in your neighborhood for a week. She earns a decent profit and decides to open up a second stand at her grandparents house. Unfortunately, she doesnt have enough money for the expansion. Other kids could pitch to cover the costs and receive a portion of the profits she makes. Thats exactly what happens every day in the stock markets all over the world with thousands of different companies and millions of stockholders. how to invest in the Market, Stock Purchasing Guidelines If you want to purchase stocks, youll want to form a relationship with a stock trader. These are individuals who work in the stock exchange, through virtual stock exchanges, or with trading software. Youll give them your money, tell them what you want to buy, and theyll complete the transaction on your behalf. For this service, they do receive a commission on the transactions. Some people also use their traders for stock advice. However, you can make your own choices about which stock to buy. Obviously, the secret to making money is to purchase stock at a lower price and sell it at a higher price. That may sound overly simplistic but its this thinking that drives all investors. Another idea to understand is supply and demand because this affects the prices in the market; stock prices go up and down based on this basic principles. For example, if lots of investors realize that big is happening for a company they may all decide to purchase stock in that company. That decision increases demand for that stock thus raising the price. On the other hand, if the same company has a poor financial quarter many investors may start selling off stock which means the supply is increasing and the price drops. Earning Money from stocks Another question you might have is how you earn money from the stocks. As a stockholder, you receive a portion of the companys profits. When the company determines their earnings and deduct all of their expenses, they are left with their profit. That profit is divided by the number of stockholders and each receives a portion. For example, if you own 1% of a company which generated $2 million in profit then you would earn $20,000 for your stock. If the company doesnt make any profits, however, you dont receive anything.
